Antony and the Johnsons
Thirty-three artists appear on the soundtrack to the Bob Dylan biopic "I'm Not There." One of the best is a beautiful retelling of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" by Antony & The Johnsons. The soundtrack to the Ethan Hawke film "The Hottest State ... Linda Thompson got help from son Teddy and his musical compatriots (Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Eliza Carthy and Antony of Antony & the Johnsons), but in song after song, it's her warm, burnished voice that's front and center, gliding into the ear ... Antony & the Johnsons' clean break with "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is a thing of beauty. Antony's ethereal voice, pretty and damaged all at the same time stands naked with minimal piano and bass accompaniment. It's as if he never heard the original ... The two-disc set begins and ends, respectively, with the requisite tunes "All Along the Watchtower" (by Eddie Vedder) and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" (a hushed reading by Antony and the Johnsons). Each one is paired with versions of the new title ... Seventy-six-year-old Rambin' Jack Elliott takes "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" back into the past for a bluegrassy ramble, and Antony and the Johnsons turn "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" into a gloriously gloomy deathbed hymn. Not everything works ... Having said that, fans of Dylan's work will want to stay through the end credits to hear Sonic Youth's version of the title song and Antony and the Johnsons' poignant version of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," the perfect ending to Haynes' musical ... Sonic Youth recasts the title song under a beautifully gauzy veil, Jim James and Calexico infuse "Goin' to Acapulco" with lush, horn-stoked languor, and Antony and the Johnsons scrape the bruised, tender underbelly of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door ... Witness Nick Cave as he swings through the title tune, or Beth Orton and Pulp's Jarvis Cocker vamp operatically through "Death of a Ladies'Man", or as Antony Hagerty (of Antony and the Johnsons) turns "If It Be Your Will" into a religious experience ... Mostly musicians from the arty, alternative edges — Yo La Tengo, Calexico, Antony & the Johnsons, and former Pavement leader Stephen Malkmus, who gets three songs — with a smattering of Dylan contemporaries Willie Nelson, Roger McGuinn and ... Just as fresh and deeply felt is the Antony & the Johnsons version of the oft-ruined "Knocking on Heaven's Door." With his tremulous falsetto and dark melodic twists at the end of phrases, Antony voices the song like an age-old hymn, with just quiet ...
